NAD PP1 Phono Pre-amp Stage, Audiophile Upgrades inc Cables and New Power Supply

  

In the early 2000s, NAD believed that the future was digital and hence they removed the standard phono preamps from their range of integrated amplifiers, as most customers simply didnt need them. However, they didnt neglect those who still loved vinyl, offering this standalone phono stage. Please note, it is designed for moving magnet (MM) cartridges only. As an enthusiast, Im always keen to see what vintage gear can do and Ive done my usual thing of going a bit over the top with this one. It arrived with a broken power supply and capacitors which were dried out. Now, however, I have not only replaced the tired parts, I have upgraded them to some of my favourite audiophile items.

For those who are interested, here is the list. Electrolytic capacitors changed for Elna Silmic II and Panasonic FC. Film Capacitors replaced with MKP-10.

All 1/4watt metal and carbon film resistors replaced with over spec 1/2watt Takman 1% metal film. New Neutrik Rean gold plated phono sockets on the input side. New Neutrik Rean sockets on the output side replacing the captive cable supplied as standard (see photo 4 for the old back panel). New Mogami studio grade pure copper interconnect cable with gold plated plugs (see my separate listings for information on these fantastic cables, and my feedback). New earth binding post (NAD fitted one as standard from the PP2 onwards). New aluminium isolation feet, replacing standard stuck on pads. New 15v DC power supply. So, after all this, how does it sound. The background is extremely quiet and the sound is clean, dynamic, detailed and far above its humble origins.

I have come to realise over the many upgrades Ive done to amplifiers of various types, that these components have a sound quality all of their own. In a word, it is BIG!

By removing distortion and allowing the detail through, the nuance in the music comes forward and the individual parts gain room to breathe. I was sorely tempted to keep it and sell my other one. Still not sure Im making the right decision.
