Yamaha M-50 Stereo Hi-Fi Power Amplifier. This is a legendary amplifier from the 1980s, with Japanese design and build quality that is unrivaled today. The design incorporates the ZDR, X-SUPPLY and Linear Transfer Bias. The M-50 incorporates a revolutionary Yamaha circuit which completely eliminates distortion occurring in the final amplifier stage. The M-50 employs Yamaha's X-Power Supply, which controls the amount of power fed from the AC line to the power supply to precisely match the amount of power consumed by the amplifier at any given instant. The result is a perfectly linear composite transfer function which theoretically avoids crossover distortion. What this means is that the M-50, unlike ordinary push-pull amplifiers, is dramatically free from crossover distortion, especially at low listening levels and in the high frequencies.

Advanced circuitry like this enables the M-50 to achieve extraordinarily high performance. The real power output and specifications are known to test significantly higher than the documentation, (unlike a lot of today's equipment if you check on websites such as audiosciencereview. Power output: 120 watts per channel into 8?

Frequency response: 1Hz to 100kHz. Total harmonic distortion: 0.0005%.

Signal to noise ratio: 122dB. Dimensions: 435 x 380 x 133mm. Lab testing the Yamaha M-50 at'Hi-Fi Classic'. This amplifier is from my personal collection. As such, it has been re-tested whilst being photographed and packaged up.

It is a British 240v version of the model, which is especially rare as most are Japanese or US 100-120v and would require an additional external transformer to use. I tested all speaker outputs A and B, which are quite flimsy and people sometimes replace them with banana sockets. However, as they still function fine I have left them original. The Rogers LS3/5a speakers are not included in the sale and were just used to test the system before sale.

There are some marks here and there, but most things that are 40 years old will have marks. I should also mention that the previous owner (some years ago) to myself was a smoker, so it has a cigar smell if you sniff inside it.

I wasn't that bothered as I don't usually sniff amps and this smell could be Febreezed or just dissipate with time. Also the power button bulb has been upgraded with an amber LED to match the original glow. It has been packaged up in another Yamaha box with plastic foam corner protectors and absorbent foam dampers across the base of the box.
